The renewal of a historic winemaking complex in Gyöngyös, bringing together carefully restored heritage buildings and restrained contemporary additions.
At the edge of the historic centre of Gyöngyös, the Borpalota has been renewed as a contemporary winemaking complex rooted in the city’s long viticultural tradition. The ensemble comprises the former headquarters of the Gyöngyös–Visonta Winegrowers’ Cooperative and the Neoclassical stable building of the Orczy Castle.
Built in the early 19th century, the former stable is joined by the Koháry Street wing, a perimeter block that expanded in successive phases over the course of the 20th century. Together, these historically layered structures have been reconfigured to accommodate a contemporary winery.
The architectural concept is founded on the careful preservation and restoration of the individual building elements according to their respective historical character, complemented where necessary by new contemporary volumes. The design brings the organically evolved, eclectic ensemble into a coherent architectural order while retaining the legibility of its successive historical layers.
The new interventions are deliberately contemporary in expression, yet restrained in scale and gesture. Rather than imitating the existing fabric, they establish a measured and respectful dialogue with the historic structures, allowing old and new to remain clearly distinguishable while forming a unified whole.
